Stages of CLD

1) Cooing/babbling

2) Holophrastic-
variable intonation to deliver same word, convey different meanings

  • Basic syntax
  • One word: Subject, Verb or Order
  • Basic Halliday's Functions- convey emotion, instruction, etc.
3) Telegraphic:
  • Virtually complete utternaces- three or four morphemes
  • Omission of:
    • Auxilliary verbs
    • Prepositions
    • Conjunctions
    • Inflectional affixes

  • SVO not always complete (SV or VO)
4) Post-telegraphic:
  • Mirrors that of an adult
  • Varied complexity in syntax
  • Use of modal and prmary auxiliary verbs
  • SVO syntax
