Text speak is continuouisly evolving- widening the gap of understanding between parents and teens
Abbreviations such as 'm8' and 'gr8' considered antique; just as parents catch on to this trend it changes again
Study shows 86% of parents do not understand what their children say via textspeak

Evolution of technology- introduced more conveinient methods of text speak
---> predominant use of smartphones allow pictographic messaging, emojis- express facial expressions and feelings to compensate for absence of face-to-face communication
---> New apps- snapchat reduce demand for people to use language- abbreviated syntax even further- picture does the talking

Social media allows teen slang to evolve at such a pace, interconnectedness online allows trends to have a worldwide effect in a matter of seconds.
For example, in 2015 the online video platform 'Vine' stimulated the use of the noun 'fleek' amongst teens as a synonym for 'good-looking', started off in USA  but quickly made its way to UK talk amongst teenagers.
Baffles parents, who although may use social media, do not have the same access as theirt children to videos and 'memes'.

Derogatory phrases such as 'sket' and 'ho' are becoming more common- used against females to label them as 'whores' even if they do not display signs of promiscuity
