Feminism

This article is against feminism because it implies that the concept is ironically making women weaker rather than making them stronger individuals. The article states that feminism encourages women to use false evidence to exaggerate the inequality between women and men: decieving others into thinking the difference between them is far bigger than it really is. The article also conveys the point that feminism has encouraged women to 'retreat to a "safe place"' whenever someone opposes there views: implying that it makes women afraid of opposition, and therefore weaker when interacting with other memebr of society. Most importantly, the article illustrates that the main reason feminism is making women weaker is because it encourages females to fear men, rather than seek harmonious equality with them.

This is a pro-feminist article, because it stands out against the latest anti-feminist campaign labelled 'Women Against Feminism'. The article explores how many many women do  not understand the real definition of feminism: therefore explains how the concept is based on equality between women and men and not the belief that women are superior to their male counterparts; in contrary to popular belief. Therefore, the article encourages women who oppose feminism to join in with the concept to promote its true, equality-based nature.

The three different theories for way in which men and women speak are:

  • Difference theory- The theory that men and women converse completely differently as a result of the two genders being placed in different sub-cultures. This concept is believed to take effect from childhood, because girls are believed to be exposed around more emotive language about feelings; whereas boys are spoken to with far more imperative verbs. As stated in the book 'You Just Don't Understand'  by Deborah Tannen, the main six differences between the speech of men and women are:
    • Status vs. support - men see language as a means of asserting dominance; women see it as a way of confirming/supporting ideas
    • Independence vs. intimacy - men "go it alone"; women seek support.
    • Advice vs. understanding - men see language as problem solving; women see it as a means of empathy.
    • Information vs. feelings - males are concerned with the facts; women with emotions.
    • Orders vs. proposals - men use imperatives; females use hidden directives.
    • Conflict vs. compromise - men will argue; women will try to find a middle ground
  • Deficit Theory- This is the theory that women's language is deficient iin comaprison to male speech. For instance, it states that female speech lacks authority compared to male speech, hence reflecting an inferior social status. Also, the theory suggests that women use more indecisive language, less expletives, more specialised vocabulary for domestic chores and more empty adjectives compared to men.
  • Dominance Theory- This theory explores how men seem to control and dominate mixed-sex conversations. This is shown through most interruptions coming from the man in the conversation , and through the male asserting his dominance over the female by applying constraints to the conversation. Linguists believe that this reflects how men and women do not share equal positions in conversations: which therefore explains why women are sometimes perceived to be inferior in society,
